Blue Dog Woolies

| Monday, April 29, 2013

Welcome readers.  It has been some time now that I have done any product reviews so this week I am please to bring you one.  From the far east of South Berwick, Maine let me brag on Wendy Chapman the designer and creator behind Blue Dog Wollies.  This is her fantastic Etsy shop that she hand crafts stitch markers and occasionally a few knitting patterns.  I was so drawn to her stitch markers because of the shape and the "classyness" in there simplicity.  I am sure you will agree with me when you take a look at what she has to offer in her variety of markers.

When I received my markers in the mail, I was delighted to see her packaging and branding were so neat and clean.  First impressions are everything!!

Really does it get any more well put together than this, how cute!!!

Inside the tidy brown package I found, securely fastened by a unique light weight holder, 8 delicate square stitch markers.  What a great way to not only display your items, but I will be sure to add other previously owned markers to the holder.  No more loosing markers between the couch cushions or vacuuming them off the floor!!!

Each marker has a stationary bead that sits evenly weighted on the square seamless marker.  These are some of the smoothest markers I have seen. No matter if  sliding on a cable on over any kind of knitting needle, it will be a breeze.

This set of markers contains 8 pieces.  And if you take a closer look you will see that one of the markers has two beads on it.  Fantastic idea for marking the beginning of a round pattern or the center of a project.  Big points for that added feature Wendy!

These markers are fantastic and I would recommend that everyone have a least one set if not a second set to use as a gift for a knitting friend.

Thank you again to Wendy Chapman for such great stitch markers!!

Bijou Basin Ranch

Welcome everyone to the Ranch, 'What ranch you might be asking?' Bijou Basin Ranch

Carl Koop "YakMan" on Ravelry is the proud owner of several Tibetan Yaks that he breeds for some of the most gorgeous fibers in the world.

"Hello and welcome to the Bijou Basin Ranch website. Established in 2005, Bijou Basin Ranch is a small family owned and run yak ranch located just outside the small town of Elbert on the open plains of the Colorado outback about 65 miles southeast of Denver, Colorado.

Our primary goal is to produce and sell premium yak fiber products such as rovings, yarn, and yarn blends. To do this we raise registered full blooded Tibetan yaks that have superior glossy coats which are harvested annually. We also supplement the fiber we harvest from our yaks by buying quality yak fiber from other yak ranchers across the country and abroad. Our yak fiber is then processed into yarn at various mills across the country or abroad and sold under the Bijou Spun label."
~Carl Koop~

As if they could get any cuter than that!!

Well with out any further blab from me, lets get into what we have featured for the blog this week.

Seraphim is the perfect yarn for your light and lacy projects where warmth, fluff, and softness are the goal. Seraphim is a luxuriously soft yarn, that is spun from the best pure Angora fiber(95%) blended with just a touch of viscose (5%) for added strength. Available in 6 subtle yet striking colors: Eggshell, Smoke, Evergreen, Emerald, Pomegranate, and Eggplant.
All designed to keep you warm with a lightness compared to floating!

I hope that you get a really good idea of how shiny the fiber is, when you see it in the natural sunlight.  I was thoroughly pleased with how light the texture was and at the same time could really see the idea of knitting it into a warmer garment even though it is so light looking.  The next thing that most of my readers know I am attracted to is richness in color.  These fibers have taken the beauty and richness of each colors pigment to the fullest.  When the tag reads, 'Evergreen or Eggplant' that is the trueness of the color!!  Very well done!!!

Lace / 2 ply
435 yards/50 grams
super soft with slight halo

Bijou Basin Ranch also has several other lines of yarns to choose from.
You will find a full listing of what they have to offer HERE

Now as if it were not gracious enough to just feature one of Carl Koops yarns, he has also included a Bijou Basin Ranch Original Pattern as well.

Fir Trees Cowl

Take a look at this flowing beauty of a cowl!!

I adore the open loose look of the lace and how this cowl could really be a multi purpose item.  Rain, sun, or snow you could accessorize this cowl with almost anything.  You can see how when you combing the yak fiber of the Seraphim yarn in combination with this flowing cowl pattern, you end up with a favored knit item for years.  I think this would be the perfect cowl to knit over and over and have on hand for that special Birthday or Christmas gift.  For you convince, this pattern is a quick $6.00 Ravelry Download.  Or a pick me up gifted pattern to a friend on Ravelry as well.

Just so you know how all of you my readers can quickly get your hands on some of this amazing yarn,

For any and all of you who will be at Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, please stop by the booth and tell all of our 'Yack Friends & Family' how much you enjoyed the Hotpinksocks Review!  They will want to know how you learned of the fantastic items they have to offer!

LET'S TALK STRIPES!!!

Today's yarn review is one that makes me smile at Cherie's creativity and passion for striping goodness.  Kirby Wirby Yarns is a quickly up and coming yarn company who is know for killer stripes and amazingly soft sock yarn!  For those of you who have never dyed yarn please note, STRIPES ARE TIME CONSUMING AND DIFFICULT.

I want to emphasize this fact because when you are holding a skein of Kirby Wirby Yarn in your hand, you would think "Yes, its amazing yarn," but it takes much more than love to get every purposely designed color combo.  As you will see in some of the following photos, the care and quality that is taken in "Clean Line Striping" is stunning!  Watching how one color starts and the other ends is flawless...

Now what you are all here for, amazing yarn!

Home Brewed Sparkle Self Striping Sock Yarn

Fingering / 4 ply
450 yards/100 grams
US 1 - 3 or 2.25 - 3.25mm
70% Superwash Merino Wool/25% Nylon/5% Stellina

Now for those of you who do not know what 'Stellina' is; just consider it the Sparkle in you Sock yarn!  Who does not love seeing little bits of inter woven sparkle in socks, it makes me smile each time I put on a pair.

The bounce and softness that this yarn has is fantastic, she really has done her homework on choosing a 'next to skin' so soft base.  You will be amazed at not only how it feels in the skein, but how it starts to knit up.  This is really high quality yarn, and I would recommend it to EVERYONE!

Another personal preference of mine is Good Branding.  She does such a great job with putting all her contacts and information right on her label in such a tasteful and 'eye catching' way!

As promised, I wanted to show you the detail in her striping patterns.  Look at the clean transition lines and the consistency in her blocks of color!  Well worth the price for quality and precision work.

I would 100% recommend this fantastic sock yarn to everyone!!!

Better HURRY to her Etsy Shop and get a skein before your finding everyone else snatching them up.  She does have shop updates so be watching for that 'Eye Catching Skein' that you must have.

Thank you again to Kirby Wirby Yarns for a Such an amazing line of yarn!

Julie Asselin ~ Hand Dyed Yarn

After a long awaited time, I am so pleased to be sharing with you all some "Spring Yarns."
Julie Asselin is a Designer and a Yarn Dyer.  She has a unique eye for color and really has a way of bringing it to her medium, Yarn!  She lives in beautiful Quebec Canada and is a knitter as well and can be founder on her facebook.

The yarn that I am going to be reviewing for you all today is her

Fingering / 4 ply (14 wpi)
400 yards/115 grams
70% Merino
20% Cashmere
10% Nylon

This brightly toned color is called 'Poppy Love' how fitting is that name.  I love how Julie can have a solid colored yarn but still manage to show off darker and lighter tones in her coloring, very tonal like.  The twist and loft to this yarn almost make me want to call it a heavy fingering weight.  You could do so much with this amazing yarn, you just need to get your hands on it.  A beautiful Spring Shawl comes to mind when I see this color.  How can you not want to embrace yourself it its refreshing color!!

I would recommend this yarn to everyone!!!
Thank you again to Julie for a Such an amazing line of yarn!
