Fresh from the Cauldron

| Monday, September 24, 2012

Founded in April of 2008, Fresh from the Cauldron has been producing amazing yarns and colors to match.  Influenced by Pop-culture, literary and travel related inspirations Jennifer has transformed her ideas into individually colored works of art.  Each skein is carefully colored and named appropriately.  Jennifer has had such success that she is hoping to move her company out of the home an into a studio of her own.  What a dream job!!!  She also has a fantastic Ravelry Group as well that you all should check out and be a part of.

Our first featured yarn is;

Light Fingering / 3 ply
365 yards/115 grams
Nylon (Polyamide)/Cashmere/Merino
Amazingly tight twist on this yarn, I am a huge fan of great stitch definition and that is most often because of the twist on a fiber.

The colorway is  'A Gaunt Tale' inspired by Stephen Kings novel "Needful Things."

The second featured yarn is: MCN Worsted

Worsted / 10 ply
185 yards/115 grams
Nylon (Polyamide)/Cashmere/Merino
Again, same fantastic twist but this time in a worsted weight that is so soft and so silky you would not believe it other than to handle it yourself.  I love the weight of the worsted and the thickness that comes with it.  This is a skein that I think every one could have in the stash

.
The colorway is  'Eric' inspired by the HBO Series "True Blood."

I would recommend this yarn to everyone!!!

Thank you again to Jennifer for a Such an amazing line of yarn!

The Verdant Gryphon

| Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Take a look at what is the newest yarn line at The Verdant Gryphon.  Gryphon is the designer and color artist behind this luxury yarn.  Unbelievable colors, textures and shine.  You have got to see this for yourself.  She has really got a great sense of humor when it comes to the creativity in her yarn naming.  ~Be prepared to have your credit cards out and ready to purchase~

About Mondegreen ([ˈmɒndɪˌgriːn] noun a word or phrase that is misinterpreted as another word or phrase, usually with an amusing result):

60% Blue Faced Leicester wool, 20% baby camel, 20% silk
4 oz / 200 yds
 4.5 sts/" on US#8
4-ply worsted weight

Hit Me With Your Pet Shark

Unapologetically flaming orange! Semi-solid, with the colours of an intense sunset - bright golden orange ranging to deep burnt orange.

Take a look at the suddle changes in hues as the color transends from one shade to another.  The shine and twist of this luxury yarn is enough to make me purchase one in every color!  When you have the skein in your hands you will notice two things. One, the feel of the fibers are 'next-to-skin soft.' Second, color changes are so amazing that you really are cheated at only having pictures to look at.  All of you, my readers, should have a skein of this yarn just to see its color.

Seasick Asian Man

Semi-solid deep, rich, blue-leaning red.

Like I said, the humor in her color naming is so fun!

Any and all of her amazing yarns would be a great purchase for stash...or a gift for another knitter...or better yet, a gift for yourself.

Wullenstudio Sock Yarns & Coppatina

 &

Present.....Christmas ideas and goodies for knitters of all kinds!

Just take a minute to think...have you even thought about the idea of Holiday/Christmas and what you will be knitting, giving or even asking for?  I hope that with this review I will be able to shed some light on all of those questions.

A Note from the Designer herself~
"Wüllenstudio is a six year old company founded out of the love of fine hand-dyed yarns. I have been dyeing my own yarns for knitting and weaving since 1991.

Often the colors I wanted were not available. Whether it was a certain shade or a progression of one color, I wanted it and the only way to get it was to make it myself. Soon my fellow knitters were asking for my colors as well, and the rest, as they say, is history.  I started naming my colors after old songs because there is always music playing in my studio and there is often a color combination that is suggested in a song to which I am listening.

Sometimes a color combination comes to me with no name . I just put it on my Ravelry site , "Sheila Rovelstad Designs" and let members of my group name the creation in a contest. The winner receives the first skein out of the dyepot in the mail!  I confess I make stitch markers to match whatever I am knitting! I love to knit my way around a needle and pass an elegant stitch marker from one needle point to the other with a smile and a sigh. Simple pleasures!  My love of stitch markers led me in the direction of working with sterling silver and copper.  Well, of course, I fell in love with metal work as well. Half my wool studio is now a metal working studio.

I also have another shop on Etsy called Coppatina. There you will find knitting treasures as well as shawl pins, amulets and metal yarn ball necklaces!"

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree

This fun Christmas color combo comes complete with a coordinating heal and toe mini skein.  Who would not love a pair of these for Christmas morning!

Fingering / 4 ply
450 yards/100 grams
US 1 - 3 or 2.25 - 3.25mm
75% Merino/25% Nylon
She does not just have Christmas themed yarn, I challenge you to not find a themed yarn that you just fall in love with!!!! Take a look for your self in her shop.
Along with amazing Sock yarn, my favorite thing in the world to knit, she has a second talent that I want to recognize as well.

How original is this amazing copper work!  It is not every day that you can say that you not only know a copper smith, but that you actually own a piece of hand forged copper to adorn your shawls with.  Each is carefully crafted with care and pristine design to allow for a fantastic smoothness and finish.

Along with the Cooper creations, you have hand made Stitch markers that are equally as beautiful.

Thank you again to Sheila for a Such an amazing array of Review Items!

Alcidina

"Exploring the cosmos one yarn at a time.
Alcidina, offering silk, cashmere, and cloud-soft merino yarns in spacey colorways! My inspiration comes from the exquisite imagery taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and other astronomy instruments around the globe. There are some stunning nebulae out there, and they look awesome in yarn!" ~Trisha~

Trisha Paints such a stellar match from her inspiration to her yarn it is hard to tell the difference between the two.  A great indicator to a true work of art.  Take this beauty for an example.

On Earth, we witness a solar eclipse when our Moon's shadow sweeps across our planet's face as it passes in front of our Sun. Jupiter, however, has four moons roughly the same size as Earth's Moon. This image shows a rare alignment of three of Jupiter's largest moons – Io, Ganymede, and Callisto – across the planet's face. Seeing three shadows on Jupiter happens only about once or twice a decade. Jupiter appears in pastel colors in this photo because the observation was taken in near-infrared light.

This item is multi-colored in mint, periwinkle, and pink tones with a range of intermediate colors.
This is a fantastic choice for sock yarn.  Not only would the colors match well, but the finer content is on that will hold up to sock use.

Thank you again to Trisha for a Such an amazing Skein of Hand Dyed Yarn!

Amethiste Shawl

| Monday, September 3, 2012

"I try to not ever take myself too seriously, and I love to encourage others and help them find the creativity that lies within themselves.
I love teaching and helping others learn things as much as I love to learn new things myself. I especially enjoy teaching adult beginners in any art form because I appreciate their love of learning, willingness to try new, unfamiliar things at any stage of life, and their joy in the process.
Other things I enjoy are very dark chocolate (mmmm, priorities…), nature, distance running, cooking, photography, dance, dogs with goofy grins, and purring lap cats (and every kind of animal). But mainly, I really enjoy fiber - knitting, spinning, and crocheting it!"

I was so excited about the chance to review the Amethiste Shawl.  This is a modern design that can be used with many alterations and additions of your own creativity.  Robin has done a fantastic job of offering a pattern that has choices to fit all styles.  First choice that I love is the option of size; small shawl or large, scarf-like or a true shawl.  With such a modern design, you could really use any kind of color or theme in your yarn choices.  This is great for stash diving or using up single skein "Special Yarns."

I love how this pattern really depicts the idea of a lace design.  Robin has captured all audiences in her pattern writing by providing written directions as well as beautiful charted instructions.  All are easy to read and give great direction to her detail.  I am the kind of knitter that would rather have to much direction and clarification than to have guess work in the pattern.  This is a fabulously well rounded pattern that I would recommend for any range of knitter.

Photos are always a draw for me when choosing a pattern.  Robin has left nothing to be missed.  She captured the look of the shawl, shape and the versatility of color.  I can easily see myself making several sizes and colors.  Pictures really do say a thousand words!

On a personal note; I am the oldest of three sisters and can easily see myself replicating the various shades of purple shawls for my sisters and I to take family photos in.

I have chosen to knit my shawl in a dark tonal teal.  I am a fan of solid cotton long sleeved shirts with a color-pop of a shawl layered over the top.  I'm ready to welcome in Fall with my new shawl!

Thank you again to Robin Ulrich for a Stunning Shawl Pattern!
