Liberty Fibers

| Monday, August 27, 2012

This is a new fiber company to me.  I was so blown away at the colors and ideas that transpired into fiber, I just had to do a review!
Judy O'Toole is the owner and dyer behind all of this color and wonder.  She has been hand dyeing for over ten years, first as a rug hooker and then primarily yarn.  Her website has information about the colorway collections that she has created.  She enjoys challenging herself to communicate mature and art into hand dyed yarn while creating colors that respond to hand knitting.

I am so excited to share with you not only that this is an amazing 100% Superwash yarn, but I have never felt anything so "close to the skin" soft.  It is hard to believe that it is really superwash.  The twist on the yarn is one that makes me think Socks or Shawl instantly.  It is a full bodied yarn that will hold up to any kind of foot action.  These colors would make for some fantastic projects.

Rhubarb/Nature Collection

Mussel/Coastal Collection
Liberty/Asian Collection
It really comes down to a matter of choice and your likes in colors.  I think this is a fantastic staple that every one should have in a yarn stash.  The care and consideration that has been taken with every skein is remarkable!

Thank you again to Judy O'Toolefor a great yarn!

Handwerks Artisan Yarns & Textiles

| Monday, August 20, 2012

Laura Schickli, a knitter since childhood and biology teacher by training has been experimenting with yarn, spinning wheels, fiber, dye pots, looms, and knitting machines at every opportunity. Handwerks is the merging of Laura's creative talents, technical abilities and teaching skills. With an appreciation for thoughtful craft, Handwerks offers high quality hand dyed yarns, patterns, handwoven textiles, and instruction.
"My Girl Scout leader taught me to knot a headband on circular needles when I was 9.  I grew up in Wisconsin so after the headband I went on to knit mittens and hats.  My grandmother also helped me along the way, I just never quit knitting.  In college in MN I started designing my own patterns, combining stitches for scarves, mittens and sweaters.  Later when I lived in Wash DC, I started teaching knitting at a LYS and I started a small business, designing and matching knitting children's sweaters.  After my kids went off to college, I decided it was time to start another small business to keep my out of 'trouble'."

Let me introduce you to the Textile & Artisan designer herself, Laure Schickli.

Laure has graciously offered up two kinds of fingering weight yarn for this weeks review.

So-Soft-Sock

A fabulous blend of 80% superwash merino, 10% Cashmere and 10% nylon with 435 yds/100grams. Fingering weight, ideal round 4 ply, recommended needle sizes US 1-3, 27-32 sts/4" in stockinette stitch.

Just what you need to pamper your feet or knit a soft scarf or shawl. An amazing choice for fingerless mitts or mittens!

Luscious rich colors, some almost solids and some coordinating multis. Perfect together for Fair Isle pattens or simple stripes. The almost solids work well for cables and stitch patterns.

This is one of those times that I wish you could feel the yarns right through the screen.  The plush feel of this yarn is exactly what I would want to make a great pair of socks out of!

Silky Sock

Buttery blend of 50/50 superwash merino and silk, 4ply, 100 grams/435 yds skeins. Fingering weight, recommended needle sizes US 1-3, 27-32 sts/4" in stockinette stitch.

Luminous, lustrous and springy; a beautiful yarn. Perfect for luxury socks, shawls, summer tops and more.

The shine and silky feel to this yarn is unmatched to any other that I have used in the past.  I am so excited to think of all the garment possibilities that come with this yarn.  All the fantastic new fingering weight cardigans that are out now.
If you'd like enough for a sweater Laure is happy to dye a batch for you.
That is customer service at it's finest!!!

Thank you again to Laura Schickli for a great yarn!

Lola~Doodle's

| Monday, August 13, 2012

Lola~Doodle's is a fantastic up and coming yarn dying company.  Temple is the designer behind this innovative and incredible company.  I am a color girl...in case you had not already noticed.  She totally gets the idea of bringing life and color to her yarns.  The inspiration that she has is passionate and vibrant.  Let me hold of on telling you and just show you exactly what I mean.

Temple was gracious enough to share with us all two of her most popular bases of  fingering weight yarns.

Classic Sock
463 yards/100 grams
US 0 - 2
75% Merino/25% Nylon
Machine Washable

I hope you can see the richness and depth to her dying.  This particular skein has a feel of bleeding from one color to another with minimal transition.  So fluid like in the coloring.  I can't get enough of it.

Posh Socks
435 yards/100 grams
US 0 - 3
80% Merino/10% Cashmere/10% Nylon
Hand-painted luxury sock yarn in a heavy fingering weight blend of superwash merino wool, cashmere and nylon.

I just love the Posh Sock, this color is called Fire Eater.  I can honestly say that I have never seen anything even close to this color way!  Love it.

Thank you again to Lola~Doodle's for a Fantastic Review!

The Little Knitting Company

|
I am thrilled to talk to you all and share about a fantastic company.  The Little Knitting Company has all of you wants and needs; from yarn, needles, bags and more.  Click on over the the shop and take a look for your self.  I was more than happy to be able to feature a yarn review.  The yarn that I am going to be reviewing is called: Amorini

This is a fantastic blend that consists of,
- 80% cotton make 20% cashmere
Length: 250m
Unit Weight: 100g skein
WPI: 17
Yarn Weight: 4-ply / Fingering
Tension: 24 stitches and 36 rows over 10cm (4 in)
Needles: 3-3.5mm (US 2-3)
Wash Care: Hand Wash

I have to say that I have never really considered the paring of cotton and cashmere, however after holding this skein in my hand and getting a good feel for the yarn, it is a great combination.  It will stand up to wear and tare but has a much softer feeling having a cashmere blend.

I could see this knit up into a great pair of work gloves.  How fun would garden gloves be.

Thank you again to The Little Knitting Co for a great yarn!

All the way from Germany, please let me introduce to you Liesa Owner of Sternenstaub.  I am so excited about this yarn and the sparkle she has added to make it just that Starry DK

 (How cute is she!!!)

This fantastic muted black color way is appropriately named "Little Black Dress."

StarryDK
DK / 8 ply
232 yards/100 grams
US 6 - 7 or 4 - 4.5mm
75% Merino extrafine
20% Mulberry Silk
5% Silver Stellina Sparkle
I love the feel of this yarn!! It has a great twist to the yarn that will really show off stitch definition, even on a black yarn.  I am a push over for anything that sparkles so the touch of Stellina is a must for me.  I love that this is not just black, it really has a slight hint of what I am going to call soot gray.  Stunning in the presentation.  Liesa even included in her beautifully packaged box of yarn, a simple snag free stitch marker in a royal blue.  Love it!!!  It is the little touches that matter.  Even though this yarn comes from Germany, it was just as fast with shipping as ordering within the states.  She even has a translation button on the left side of the shop page for English speaking buyers.  She really goes the extra mile.
Did I mention that I LOVE this yarn!!!

Class Reunion Pattern

|

I love the pattern that I am about to show you.  You know when you are looking for a pattern that you can use up a sweaters worth of yarn on and have something that you can wrap yourself in during the long cold months of winter.  "Class Reunion" just might be the sweater pattern for you.  The designer is Carol Sunday.  She has done such a great job bringing comfort to a classy look.  This could be used as a lounging garment or for a layering piece on a cold winters night on the town.  Besides, who does not have a sweaters worth of worsted weight yarn that they want to dive into.

I love the construction of this pattern.  Very easy to follow and understand in how Carol has written it.  She really captures a unique look that is very non-sweater looking.  The pattern its self is one that I can see on a person on any size and shape.  Very flattering to all types.

I love the detail that almost looks like fishing nets throughout.  When I am home visiting family on the Oregon Coast, this is just the kind of sweater that I want to adorn my shoulders with and head out to the beach for a sunset walk.  Really it could be your catch all sweater for any reason.  I bet by now you are all thinking about what you have in your stash for worsted weight yarn.  Well...cast on and be ready for the fall.

Thank you again to Carol Sunday for a great pattern!
