The Fiber Seed

| Sunday, July 29, 2012

~A note from the Designer~

"A few years ago I inherited a bunch of knitting things from my grandmother. I kept them with intent of eventually learning how to knit and finally decided to see if knitting was in my genes. Well they were and I've gone with it. Yarn is my weakness and I have many many skeins, of many colors, so the possibilities are endless.
I'm a member of Team FAST, EtsyKnitters, and Yarn-a-holics, go figure at least I admit it on that last one."
~I am a confessed yarnaholic. If I’m not doing something fiber related I’m asleep~

I am so Excited about showing you the creations of this newer dyer.  The Fiber Seed is located in Tampa FL and has a passion for color like no other.  Really...I should let the photos convince you.

The color way on the Left is {Peacock Feather} on the Right is {Sunset}

Lindsay English has done a stellar job in bringing her passion to light in the form of Hand Dyed Yarns!!  The two yarns that are shown are in her "Sprout " base.
·         Fingering / 4 ply
·         480 yards/125 grams
·         US 1 - 3
·         90% Merino/10% Nylon (Polyamide)
·         Machine wash, Dry Flat

In case you needed to do a double take on the yardage, yes...it’s really 480yards.  A fantastic amount of yarn in such stand alone colors.  If you happen to live in Tampa FL, you should know that Lindsey sells her yarns in her LYS, Knit 'n Nibble
All of this wonderful goodness in yarn can be found at this website:
Why not order a few skeins and see what your creative eye can knit up!

Thank you again to Lindsay English for the fantastic yarns!

Nefarious Web

|

I am so pleased to have the chance to review a pattern by Kyla Hurst.  The pattern that will be reviewed is called; Nefarious WebOriginally released as a mystery KAL in the Ravelry Group Criminal Knits.

Kyla has a really cute little tag line that goes with the inspiration of this pattern that I would love to share with you.  "The itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout to spin..er knit, her Nefarious Web!
How cute is that!!
~She does admit that their is no use of spiders in this pattern~

This is a shawl pattern that really takes on a pattern and shape of its own.  If you are looking for a shawl with a unique shape, this is the pattern for you.  It is knit from the bottom inward and she has her pattern broken down into written directions as well as charts for every one's convince.

When it come to my knitting a pattern, I tend to stash dive first.  However, Kyla has really done a great job in matching her yarn choice to create the look of this shawl.  I would definitely take her recommendation and use Wolle's Yarn Creations.  If you are new to this yarn, all you will need to do is look at all the color changing goodness that has been knit in this elegant shawl and you will be ready to cast on.

To top off this elegant looking shawl, Kyla has added the sparkling element of beads.  Besides the look of a glistening gem adorned on your shawl, the beads create a comfortable added weight to your shawl that I think you will really like.  I have always liked the element of beads on the edging of shawls and this on is right on with the look.
This is a fantastic pattern that would make a great "on-the-go" pattern for the last few months of summer.  Sitting at a baseball game or picnicking at the park with the family, be sure to bring along your Nefarious Web for a great Summer knit.

Thank you again to Kyla Hurst for the fantastic Shawl Pattern!

GherkinsBucket

| Sunday, July 22, 2012

Hold on to your needles!!  I have got some loud and proud colors to show you.  Please meet Krysten who is the owner and dyer of GherkinsBucket.

"Hello, it’s me, the woman behind the Bucket. I’m the mom of an eight year old, and so I enjoy the quiet escape that spinning and crafting can bring. I usually find myself wanting to go in all kinds of directions at once, so Gherkin’s Bucket is sure to be an eclectic mix of handmade items."

This little beauty is calling my name!!! PINK!

Not only is the dying out of this world, but her color choices are so unique.  Who does not want a hint of sparkly glitter in their knitting project.  It has a way of catching the light at just the right time.  How much fun would "Who's Loving You" be knit up into a pair of fun adult mittens for the fall and winter!  A one of a kind knit for a one of a kind yarn.

The feel of the yarn is so soft and had a great bounce feel to it.  A textured stitch would show really well as well as create a fun pattern.  Who does not need a skein or two of this goodness to round out the stash!

Thank you again to Krysten for a great yarn sampling!

Stone Arabie

| Monday, July 16, 2012

I am proud to introduce to you John, the owner of Stone Arabie.

"I have been weaving, and more recently knitting, since arriving in Canada from England. Principally I have been weaving tartan, particularly woollen tartan blankets, on commission for clients world-wide. I have been fascinated by tartan and its history for many years and have spent much time reading, researching and weaving tartan. I am an active member of the Scottish Tartans Authority, researching Canadian tartans, the results of which can be seen on my website.

Over the years I have yearned to weave with ‘exotic’ yarns, especially angora and cashmere. With the help of a friend in China, I have recently been able to find yarns of high quality with a good range of colours at a reasonable price.

My workshop and company, Stone Arabie, is located on Vancouver Island, on the west coast of Canada, close to the small town of Qualicum Beach. We are set in the foothills of the mountain range that runs down the spine of the Island. Originally, Stone Arabie was the name of the first piece of land that my partner’s ancestors, the Nelles family, purchased in New Jersey in the 1740s. The drawing of the village is taken from a powderhorn made in 1753 which shows the church and surrounding houses."

These yarns are affordable speciality yarns and I have learned a great deal about different kinds of fibers in reviewing this yarn.  I am so impressed with the care and quality that has been taken to preserve the true nature of these fibers.  How about a look at exactly what I am talking about!

Tibetan Mink

Cashmere 2-ply

Royal Mink

Now for what you all will want to have for your own!!

Angora Pura
Approx. 430 yards per 50gm skein (4000 yards/lb)
      W.P.I.:     36
Weaving: Plain 18 epi, Twill 24 epi
      Knitting: On 3.25mm needles, 26sts/42rws over 4
                      inches. At this gauge 12" x 12" = 20 grams.
Washing: Wash by hand using detergent, never soap,
and a little white vinegar. To raise the nap,
washing can be quite vigorous as there is
                      little shrinkage. Rinse thoroughly, with
white vinegar in at least the last rinse.
Remove excess water with a towel and lay
                      flat to dry.

     Price: $US 8.60 ($C 8.75) per 50gm skein
The masterful work that has been created in these timeless breeds of fiber are enough for anyone to desire a skein or two.  Let me tell you, until you have held John's Cashmere in your hands yourself, you will never really know the true meaning of soft.

Thank you again to John for a great yarn sampling!

Angora is one of the lightest, loftiest and warmest natural fibres. This 100% pure Angora yarn knits and weaves beautifully. It can be used in weaving as either warp or weft.

Cobblestone Creek Farm

| Sunday, July 15, 2012

"We specialize in hand dyed yarn and fiber, handspun and raw fleece. You may also see some hand knits, knitting supplies and sewn or quilted items too.

We use professional acid dyes except on rare occasion (example natural dyes, etc). If something other than professional acid dyes are used, it will be stated in the listing."

This is a note from Clarissa who is the owner of Cobblestone Creek Farm.  I was so excited to see what she had sent for the review.  I was hoping for something a little different than my usual reviews.  Without fail, she came through with "MINI SKEINS!"

These little skeins are so cool!  Now you may have never used a mini skin or even thought of all the neat options that they can be used for, so I am going to do just that.

Mini Skeins are handy for many projects.  One of my favorite uses is to use them in socks to replace the toe and heal to spice up a vanilla sock.  I have also seen some really cute knitted gloves that each finger was a different color.  How fun would that be!  Mini skins are also fantastic for Sock blankets or scrap quilts.  No matter what you choose to do with these little gems, you really should give them a try.  It is also a great way to sample a dyers yarn base to determine if you want to purchase more from them.

The Skeins that Clarissa has sent are in her Brights Collection.  This is her Granite Sock; 100% Superwash Merino, 2 ply yarn.

I love her base, it is so squishy and plush.  I can easily see a pair of socks out of this base.

Thank you again to Clarissa for a great yarn sampling!

Dot Dot Smile

| Tuesday, July 10, 2012

I am So excited to show you all this next artiest!  Kelli who lives in New York has something fun and exciting to add to the knitting & crocheting world.  Let me start by saying if any of you are in need of a great swap gift or a gift for a crafter, you have got to check out Dot Dot Smile Etsy Shop.  I am so amazed at the range of ideas she has come up with.  Everything from needles; hooks, stitch markers, and even kits.

For today's review and give away:  I am so excited to show you the Honey Bee Knitting Needles.

She does a great job of packaging and protecting the needles for shipping.  How cute, glitter paper!!

You can see that one needle is a honey bee and the other is the hive.

It really does not get any cuter than that.  The touches she adds to each item are small enough that they do not have any effect on your knitting and you hardly even notice a weight difference.  How fun would it be to spice up your knitting with a pair of themed needles or stitch markers.  She has many different themes and a variety of sizes sure to fit all you wants and needs.  Go on over and take a look for your self!

Thank you again to Kelli for your fantastic Needles!

Lazy Perry Ranch

| Sunday, July 1, 2012

~Designer Bio~

"I have been crafting in one way or another since I was a small child. I have studied herbs and midwifery and am a nature junkie. I also homeschool all three of my children. Most recently my family has begun building the Lazy Perry Ranch. We have poultry, angora rabbits, and an alpaca named Bacchus to keep our days full of adventure.
I draw my inspiration from the incredible scenery that surrounds me. I live in the beautiful Mojave Desert. Wildlife is abundant and the gorgeous colors of wildflowers can be seen for miles around. Join me in my passion for nature and the beauty of the Mojave. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I do.
Collette, a self confessed addict to spinning, knitting, crochet and all things crafty!!"

Collette is really being modest, she has produced some summer time colors that are outstanding!
